abandonment and renewal

land in 2070

The intensified agricultural production and suburban expansion of the 2020s and 2030s pushes the land’s limits, leading to the cyanobacteria disaster. Following the disaster, abandoned cropland transitions to grassland, wetland, and forest. The new agriculture, which serves only the local market, consists of small grains, vegetables and fruits, corn, hay, and pasture. Most urban areas have deteriorated after the abandonment, but still consist of a mixture of invading vegetation and hard surfaces, such as roads and parking lots.
